For Paris Hilton, life was way simpler before they invented the internet. If she was born in less technologically advanced times, maybe her inherited fortunes would have been enough to buy her an innocent reputation. As it were, it’s almost 16 years since the hotel heiress went from being just daddy’s little girl to pretty much an adult entertainer when a sex tape of her with her ex-Rick Salomon was leaked to the public. While it was crushing for the young woman, it literally put her name on the map. Let’s look into how a sex tape grabbed the public’s attention and made Paris Hilton a star in her own right.
One night in Paris
The famous sex tape was released on June 15, 2003, as “1 Night in Paris. It was released only three weeks to the premiere of the reality television series ‘The Simple Life’,” in which Paris Hilton starred with her friend Nicole Richie. Needless to say, it proved a massive hit and immediately grabbed the media’s attention. Interesting timing for those (like yours truly) who don’t believe in coincidences.
The porn industry was abuzz when the tape was released, and it received several gongs at the AVN Awards in 2005 for “Best Selling Title of the Year,” “Best Renting Title of the Year” and “Best Overall Marketing Campaign — Individual Project.” There was also the Fame Award for best celebrity sex tape back in 2008.
The sex tape was taken with a handheld camera, and although her family claims she may have been drugged, any discerning eye can tell she was sober and compliant throughout. Apparently, the tape was shot in 2001 when Hilton was a barely-legal 19 while Rick Salomon was 30. It is nothing more than a grainy, night-vision glimpse into a session of mattress frolicking between two lovers, but one which no doubt propelled her into global recognition. Perhaps it was just a marketing gimmick? Whichever way you look at it, Paris Hilton would not be where she is today were it not for the sex tape.
Not that she embraced her new found fame with open arms (at least not in public). If anything, she initially vehemently denied its existence, branding Salomon “a complete liar and scumbag” in New York magazine. She claimed that not only did she not remember filming the tape; she didn’t know it existed, to begin with, and was actually shocked to see it online. She would later be forced to backpedal after it became obvious that the sex tape was real. Her publicity machine kicked in as they attempted to de-tarnish her name, releasing a statement about the leak: “The Hilton family is greatly saddened at how low human beings will stoop to exploit their daughter, Paris, who is sweet-natured, for their own self-promotion as well as profit motives,” read part of the statement.
In an interview with TMZ, Paris claimed that she never made a dime out of the tape and that she never intended for it to be a commercial venture, saying: “It felt like I’d lost part of my soul and been talked about in such cruel and mean ways. I literally wanted to die at some points. I was like, ‘I just don’t want to live,’ because I thought everything was taken away from me. I didn’t want to be known as that.” Not sure whether too many people will buy her explanation.
“I wish I had never met him,” she said about Salomon. “That is actually the one regret in my life. I wish that I had never met that guy. I could not leave my house for months. I was so depressed, humiliated. I didn’t want to be seen in public.”
To her credit, Paris knows how to work the media, and she has since used the fame she generated to venture into multiple businesses with tremendous success. For starters, she has a line of perfumes that have sold over $2 billion as of 2018. In addition, she has opened 50 “Paris Hilton” stores in over 40 countries and licensed her name and brand to over 17 products. She also has a resort- Paris Hilton Beach Club at Azure in Manila, Philippines, a children’s clothing line, a cosmetic line and plenty of other ventures.
She was already fucking rich before the sex tape, but it certainly made her a household name. As a matter of fact, the agent who first received the sex tape says he didn’t know who she was. “I was just told she was a socialite, heir of the Hilton family fortune and hotel chain,” the agent, a certain Kevin Blatt said. “[I] had no idea that she was going to become this big of a star.”
The tape led to a long legal battle that was eventually settled in 2004. Her $30 million invasion of privacy claim was tossed out by a judge, but Salomon (who many suspect was behind the leak) would have to give her $400,000. That’s pocket change compared to what she has made in the aftermath of the leak.
Some people know how to make lemonade when life throws lemons their way. She is not the first to gain fame using a sex tape, but Paris Hilton is certainly a prime example. Feel free to visit our fappening section for more celebrity sex tapes and nudes. The best is yet to cum.
